The F. M. Kirby Foundation is proud to celebrate more than 20 years of partnership with Caring House, Inc., a Durham, N.C.-based nonprofit that provides affordable, comfortable housing to more than 700 adult cancer patients receiving treatment and their caregivers at the Duke Cancer Institute.

Since its founding in 1992, Caring House has offered more than just a place to stay — it has cultivated a community of care. Guests are welcomed into a home-like setting that includes private rooms, communal living spaces, and opportunities to connect with others experiencing similar challenges. By alleviating the financial and emotional burdens of housing during treatment, Caring House allows patients and their families to focus on healing.

Over the years, Duke Cancer Institute’s patient base has grown and more patients are traveling from further away to seek treatment, with recent data showing that more than 3,000 people must travel two or more hours one way to attend cancer-related appointments. The urgency to expand capacity increases every day.

In addition to providing affordable housing during cancer treatment, Caring House also offers a variety of programming and support services, serving as a home away from home for its guests. Local civic organizations, communities of faith, and business groups frequently provide dinner and fellowship for guests. Game nights, weekly prayer services, and musical performances are just a few examples of the activities available. Oncology massage, chair yoga, jewelry, and art therapy provide a diversion from worries about health issues and facilitate reduced anxiety and increased feelings of well-being.

The F. M. Kirby Foundation supports Caring House’s mission to enhance the quality of life for those facing a difficult journey. Through this partnership, we celebrate the power of compassion and community in advancing health and well-being.
