Through thoughtful, intentional approaches to mental health intervention, Jeff Macko and Marlene Scrivo, alongside their intrepid group of counselors and interns, have helped thousands of local children become the best versions of themselves. For Jeff and Marlene, the journey has been impactful and fulfilling, helping ensure youth in our communities receive the support they need to overcome challenges and thrive.
“Seeing the changes the kids go through, the struggles. They stay connected to us, even when they eventually figure life out,” said Jeff. “It’s rewarding in many ways to see them grow and achieve so many successes along the way.”
The F. M. Kirby Foundation is honored to celebrate more than 20 years of continuous partnership with an organization that has served as a beacon of hope for youth in Morristown, Morris Township, and Morris Plains. Positive Pathways Counseling is dedicated to empowering teens ages 11-18 to navigate life’s challenges by fostering the development of social, emotional, educational, and vocational skills. Through a comprehensive range of free services — including individual, family, and group counseling, as well as supervised recreational groups — Positive Pathways equips adolescents with the necessary interpersonal skills to thrive and mature into confident, well-rounded adults.
Aside from the team of part-time counselors, who are tasked with a case load of 10-20 students each, Marlene and Jeff also lead the internship program, which partners with local colleges and universities to give students hands-on counseling experience. Marlene, who began her career as an intern, sees this as an invaluable real-world experience for future leaders looking to enter the mental health counseling space.
“Jeff and I wouldn’t have the program we have without the committed team we have,” said Marlene. “It’s true hands-on experience for interns, and our part-time licensed professionals who really make Positive Pathways what it is.”
Addressing the rising mental health concerns among adolescents, Positive Pathways recognizes that nearly half of all adolescents experience a mental health disorder at some point in their lives. The organization is dedicated to helping teens confront a range of issues, including interpersonal conflicts, peer pressure, family relationships, mental health challenges, the impact of social media, and more. Positive Pathways’ goal is to ensure that each student achieves a well-rounded high school education, emotional well-being, a positive sense of self, and readiness for college or vocational pursuits. This is accomplished through individualized treatment plans developed in collaboration with students, their families, school officials, and other mental health professionals.
Located within the Morris School District, Positive Pathways Counseling provides accessible services that help overcome common barriers to counseling, such as financial burdens, lack of insurance, and transportation. The organization operates out of Morristown High School and Frelinghuysen Middle School, offering a safe and confidential environment for after-school groups and peer support meetings. The clinical team employs evidence-based practices to support students in building on their strengths, achieving personal growth, and realizing their full potential. Through empathy, acceptance, and active listening, Positive Pathways continues to make a profound impact on the lives of the youth they serve.
“It’s amazing to watch them grow through the years,” said Marlene, who has been with the organization since its inception. “I’d say from freshman to senior year, they’re just different kids – more confident, more comfortable.”
