To touch grass is to know, on a visceral level, one’s own place in the world, not merely as an observer passing through, but as a participant in something far older and more complex. It is the difference between living beside nature and truly experiencing nature, feeling the soil give way underfoot, learning to read the landscape like a language, and recognizing which plants signal a healthy ecosystem and which ones don’t belong.

It is knowledge acquired through active participation and earned through attention — a child crouching down to identify a wildflower, tracing the path of a watershed, or understanding why a particular stretch of forest looks the way it does. To identify a plant is to see it for the first time, and to understand its role is to begin seeing everything around it differently.

This is the promise, and the goal, of modern-day environmental education. A generation that can read the natural world is one better equipped to protect it, not out of obligation, but out of genuine relationship. And relationship, as any naturalist or environmental educator will tell you, begins with curiosity and a little bit of help.

At the heart of the Great Swamp Watershed Association’s mission is a simple conviction: young people learn best with hands-on experiences. The organization’s 73-acre Conservation Management Area in Morris County has become a living classroom for thousands of students and visitors each year, where more than three miles of boardwalk wind through wetlands home to threatened species and serve as a working model of ecological health. The organization reaches more than 3,000 school children annually, with programming designed not just to spark curiosity about the natural world, but to build the kind of scientific literacy that lasts.

“Our goal is to help every student understand that the health of our environment and the health of our communities are inseparable. By bringing science to life through hands-on experiences in local streams, forests, and wetlands, we’re not only building environmental literacy, said Bill Kibler, GSWA Executive Director. “We’re inspiring the next generation to become thoughtful stewards of the watersheds that sustain us all.”

That reach extends well beyond the swamp itself. Great Swamp Watershed Association tailors its environmental education to schools across the entire watershed — from rural townships to urban communities like Paterson, Newark, and the Oranges. And through its participation in the statewide Climate Change Learning Collaborative, funded by the New Jersey Department of Education and developed in partnership with Ramapo College, GSWA supports teachers in grades 5 through 12 with place-based workshops that weave climate science into curriculum across subjects.

New Jersey Audubon’s approach to environmental education is ambitious in both scale and scope. Last year, the organization delivered more than 430 programs for over 14,000 children and adults and connected with about 1.2 million people through digital outreach. NJA welcomed more than 10,700 visitors to its nature centers and gave nearly 1,300 children meaningful outdoor experiences through their three summer camps. Its Eco-Schools initiative trained over 1,000 teachers benefiting many thousands of students around the state while equipping student-led teams to address environmental and sustainability challenges in their own schools, turning each campus into a place for hands-on conservation action.

The organization has led the way for well over a century and we intend to carry this mission into the future, helping to create future generations of conservationists.”

Inspiring the next generation of conservationists begins by connecting young people with nature in meaningful and memorable ways. Through New Jersey Audubon’s Young Birders Club, students develop bird identification skills, confidence in the outdoors, and a deeper appreciation for wildlife. Those experiences can grow into lifelong passions, as demonstrated by the World Series of Birding, an annual event that celebrates birding, teamwork, and conservation while raising vital funds to protect birds and their habitats. This year, national attention turned to three teenage birders whose 24-hour journey across New Jersey was featured by NPR (Welcome to the World Series of Birding: 24 hours with 3 teen birders : NPR), highlighting their remarkable dedication and enthusiasm. Their story is a powerful reminder that when young people are given opportunities to explore the natural world, they can become influential advocates for conservation.

That passion extends beyond birding competitions and into the field. Many of today’s young birders become tomorrow’s scientists, volunteers, and conservation leaders, contributing to the research and monitoring efforts that help New Jersey Audubon better understand bird populations, migration patterns, and habitat health.

New Jersey Audubon seeks to expand its influence beyond New Jersey. The organization works on migration issues in South America and has trained international early career biologists for 21 years.  In 2026, NJ Audubon hosted six early-career biologists from South and Central America and banded more than 2,165 shorebirds to support international conservation research. The birds crossing New Jersey’s coastline don’t recognize borders, and neither, it turns out, does the science required to protect them.

The work of cultivating connection between child and environment looks different depending on where you are. Several hundred miles south of New Jersey, in Durham, North Carolina, the Museum of Life and Science takes a similar approach in a different landscape. The museum operates on a belief that curiosity, given the right environment, can grow into a lasting commitment. Its camps and programs are designed to balance the excitement of first discovery with the satisfaction of continuous learning, drawing young visitors into hands-on encounters with nature, animal life, and scientific thinking. For the youngest learners, Nature Kids classes guide children through the natural world via sensory play, games, music, and outdoor walks, building the kind of early relationship with the environment that tends to stick. Field trips, group programs, and a robust summer camp calendar extend that reach across a wide and diverse swath of the Durham community and beyond.

“The Museum is proud to be our community’s trusted destination for discovering science and nature, from the earliest years of life and forward,” said CEO Caroline Heinonen. “Recently, two parents shared that they credit their children’s engagement with the Museum’s exhibits and programs as a key influence in their decision to pursue science at the university level. Stories like these remind us that the Museum does more than spark curiosity; it nurtures a lifelong love of learning that shapes educational paths, career aspirations, and the way people engage with the world.”

But perhaps the museum’s most distinctive contribution is what happens when young people stop being participants and start being leaders. The North Carolina Youth Climate Summit, hosted each fall, brings together high school teams to engage with local scientists and community organizers through speakers, an Eco-Fair, and workshops focused on climate action, all organized with a crucial twist. The event itself is curated by a teen advisory board that meets after school throughout the year, designing a summit that speaks directly to their peers. The day ends not with a lecture, but with each team drafting a climate action plan to carry back to their own school or community. That, in essence, is the museum’s broader philosophy made visible, teaching the next generation about the natural world while trusting them to help fix it.

Seven-hundred miles north of Durham in update New York, Adirondack Experience brings this same spirit of handson discovery to the sixmillionacre Adirondack Park, where its educational programs help students understand the deep connections between people and place. Through fully immersive field trip programs, young learners explore topics such as watershed dynamics, forest ecology, and pollination by engaging directly with interactive exhibits and the local landscape.

“Our virtual sessions and digital tools allow us to open the classroom doors for schools farther afield than the North Country classrooms we visit throughout the school year,” said Christine Campeau, School Programs Manager. “By bringing the stories, culture, and history of the Adirondacks directly to thousands of kids — both locally and across the Northeast — we’re doing so much more than just teaching. We’re sparking that lifelong commitment to conservation and curiosity that echoes the work of our peer organizations.”

For classrooms farther afield, “ADKX” extends its educational outreach through Virtual Classroom sessions and digital teaching resources that bring the North Country’s history, culture, and environmental science directly to students. In the last year alone, Adirondack Experience delivered over 500 programs to more than 10,000 students. These programs allow educators to integrate placebased learning into their curriculum regardless of geography, ensuring that the lessons of the Adirondacks — resilience, stewardship, and the interdependence of human and natural systems — are accessible to a wide range of communities. In doing so, Adirondack Experience mirrors the work of Great Swamp Watershed Association, New Jersey Audubon, and the Museum of Life and Science, each adapting environmental education to its own landscape while nurturing the same essential spark of curiosity.

Across wetlands, flyways, forests, and mountain lakes, these organizations share the common conviction that young people learn best when they can see, touch, and experience the natural world for themselves. Together, these programs are cultivating a generation prepared not only to understand the environment, but to care for it, a generation whose passion, in Richard Louv’s words, is lifted “from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young.”
