The F. M. Kirby Foundation is pleased to celebrate almost 50 years of continuous partnership with the Adirondack Council, an organization that seeks to preserve the ecological integrity and wild character of the Adirondack Park — through conservation, advocacy, and education — with members across all 50 states and beyond.
In 2025, the Council celebrated 50 years of leadership in advocacy and conservation. To continually dedicate itself to these goals, the Council uses the best science, the law, and an understanding of political decision-making to educate, inform, and motivate the public and policymakers to protect the Adirondack Park. It advocates for and offers education around clean water, clean air, wild places, and working lands and communities. To that end, the Council works with such communities and private landowners on stewardship. The impact of the Council is evident in their research and advocacy on issues ranging from the impacts of road salt and acid rain to that of harmful algal blooms and aquatic invasive species. It even educates the public on how to go about amending the NY State Constitution to better protect the environment. In all this work, the Council strives for the highest ethical standards, integrity, responsible and constructive fact-based advocacy, justice and diversity, respect, legacy, and excellence.
In the park itself, the Council focuses on environmentally responsible construction for new trail designs and other construction projects in the park, ensuring the environment is protected, while also fostering engagement with visitors. Keeping members and the public updated through press releases, blogs, newsletters, and reports, the Council encourages folks to get involved and take action through an online Action Center. This Council is deeply committed to the future, seeking to preserve wild habitat in harmony with human communities for generations to come.
